A huge fire shut down Kenya's main international airport before dawn Wednesday, forcing airlines to cancel flights or reroute them from one of Africa's busiest hubs.
Police officers stood guard in front of onlookers. The fire broke out on the 15th anniversary of attacks on the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that killed more than 200 people.
Police officers investigated the scene. Officials said the fire started at about 5 a.m. local time at the international arrivals building of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Firefighters worked at the terminal. Firefighters got the blaze under control about 9 a.m.
Firefighters struggled to put out the fire. There was, however, no immediate indication that the fire had been the result of an attack.
Passengers stood outside as smoke billowed from the terminal. The cause of the fire wasn't immediately clear.
A firefighter walked among the debris. One staffer for Kenya Airways and one passenger were taken to the hospital because of mild smoke inhalation, the company said. No other casualties were reported.
Flames engulfed the building and black smoke billowed into the sky for much of the morning as stranded passengers with their bags looked on.
